I embarked on my first professional writing project just over seven years ago, covering the music beat for my college newspaper.

Even then, I couldn’t write the story without two things: 
  1. A unique angle on the subject based on a deep knowledge of what that subject had to offer.
  2. A thorough understanding of the people who pick up the newspaper to read that column.

I’ve since written landing pages and product comparisons for boutique hotels, Facebook ads and emails, and even sales pages for dumpster rentals. But my approach remains the same.

Other copywriters will hand over a string of sentences without asking what story those sentences need to tell nor with whom those sentences should strike a cord.

My fingers won’t hit the keyboard until that intel is signed, sealed, and delivered.
